If Trump can't pay his $454 million bond and it is paid for him, should his benefactor be revealed publicly?

Normally, it's not public knowledge where the defendant or liable party gets the money to pay the court costs, the fine, the judgement or the appeal bond. But normally the defendant is not a candidate for political office, much less a presidential candidate.

Unlike contributions to a political campaign which are covered by FEC rules, anybody, including foreign governments and despots, can pay Trump's legal bills. If Trump somehow comes up with the money which he claims he does have, the American people have the right to know who Trump owes. Or will Trump be simply bought and paid for by Putin or some other malevolent person a group of persons?

(CNBC)Donald Trump does not have enough cash to obtain an appeal bond that would prevent New York’s attorney general from seizing his real estate assets to satisfy a $454 million civil fraud judgment, his lawyers indicated in a court filing Monday.

Trump’s lawyers in the filing said it has proved “impossible” for the former president to get a bond that would secure the full judgment he faces while he appeals the verdict ordering him to pay it.

Trump might make billions from Truth Social just as he's most in need of cash

On Friday, shareholders are scheduled to vote on a long-delayed merger to bring Truth Social's parent company public. Trump's stake, according to The Wall Street Journal, would be worth roughly $3.5 billion.

It will be interesting see if a Truth-Social windfall comes in time. He has until March 25th which is Monday to pony up.

He might, simply, be in a better position to arrange financing.

  4. by Ponderer on March 21, 2024 2:27 pm

So, wouldn't that roughly $3.5 billion stake only help him financially if he sells it? I suppose he could borrow against it. He may have to start his own loan company to do that though. Lenders ain't particularly leaping over each other to give him any credit.

Yeah, po, they don't want to be treated like he is.

I gotta say. This lawfare is worth about $1 billion in campaign contributions.

Let Leticia James become a Manhattan landlord. Let Fani Willis imprison Trump so he has to run the federal Executive Branch from a GA prison cell.

    Whadaeffinhoot. Eh?

    You have to love America!

Trump wouldn't be the first to try it from a Georgia prison.

Which President was imprisoned in Georgia?

  8. by Curt_Anderson on March 21, 2024 3:17 pm
Presidential candidate. Eugene V. Debs ran for president from his cell in Atlanta.

  9. by HatetheSwamp on March 21, 2024 4:54 pm

So far, Trump ain't in the actual slammer. But, wouldn't it be a hoot for him to be President in the klink.

“THROUGH HARD WORK, TALENT, AND LUCK, I CURRENTLY HAVE ALMOST FIVE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS IN CASH, A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF WHICH I INTENDED TO USE IN MY CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT” —Trump on Truth-Social

Ok, so from where did this money magically materialize?
